Kyle Roberts of Coventry Cycle Speedway raced to national glory at the weekend as he scooped the prestigious Welsh under 16 Championship, only to then go on and win the senior title just hours later.
After hitting the headlines for the past three weeks – following victory in the Chris Allen Memorial Trophy and the Coventry under 17 Championships – the 15 year old travelled to Newport for the annual Welsh Cycle Speedway bonanza. A determined Roberts powered through the youth national championships with a dominant display of speed, resilience and composure.
Members and followers of Coventry Cycle Speedway took to social media to congratulate the Kenilworth schoolboy following his national triumph; however no one expected the news to follow just a matter of hours later.
Up against world class senior competition, Roberts stormed to victory in the Welsh Open Championship meaning, at the age of just 15, Roberts has conquered his land and sports the title of national champion. With the season now over, many British Elite League clubs will be desperate to earn the signature of Coventry’s ‘boy wonder’.
Focus for Roberts will now turn to the British Indoor Championships, where he unfortunately could not compete last year due to Motorcycle Speedway commitments. He’ll be one of the favourites to earn the crown of British under 16 champion.
Roberts’ success proved to be the last time a Coventry shirt will be donned in the 2014 outdoor season. 2014 saw Coventry take a major step forward in the sport as they sparked a international interest.
Two of Coventry’s young riders, Daniel Drewett and Roberts himself, can class themselves as two of the best riders in Europe as they made the semi finals of the European Junior Championship. Myke Grimes made the British Open Final for the second time in three years whilst new members were recruited as a result of the clubs ever popular Wednesday evening ‘club night’.
This Sunday, Coventry will host the first Indoor training session of the 2014/15 season. Ryton Sports Connection will host Sunday night sessions with riders competing in multiple, light hearted, same ability races.
Training sessions will take place on a weekly basis in the build up to the British Championships – which takes place on the first weekend of 2015. Prices to participate on Sunday evenings are £1.50 for Coventry Juniors, £3 for Coventry seniors, £2 for visiting Juniors and £4 for visiting seniors.
