Grimes Falls Just Short in Controversial British Final

Coventry’s Myke Grimes fell just short of a podium finish at the British Final on Monday afternoon held Ipswich Cycle Speedway.

Grimes, who was allocated two grid two rides following Sunday nights draw at Great Blakenham Village Hall, scored 13 points from his five rides – though was on the receiving end of some controversial officiating which plagued the final.

After a sensational victory from grid four in his opening ride, the travelling Coventry fans were hopeful of a famous Godiva City victory – further enhanced when Grimes won his second race to send the ‘Cov Army’ into a rapturous applause.

A tough third ride saw Grimes take a third place after his machine got tangled with a fellow competitors front wheel – grinding Grimes to a halt. Heading into his final ride, Grimes required a win to secure the chance to take the final to a run off.

Grimes settled in second, however a forceful move from Ipswich’s Charlie Rumbold ensured Grimes hit the deck and consequently lost his position and finished last. Much to the disappointment of the Coventry fans, Grimes left Ipswich without a podium finish, though did leave with his head held high.
