Coventry defeated at Wednesfield

Coventry Cycle Speedway suffered defeat on Sunday afternoon as they took on the Wednesfield Aces at a sun bathed Ashmore Park.

The Aces, 2015 Elite League Champions, proved much stronger than the Devlins Newsagents – who offered world finalist Sammie Marsh her debut in the senior team ranks. Myke Grimes missed his first Coventry match of the season – away with family commitments – though Bobby McMillan spearheaded yet another youth dominated Coventry side.

A first heat 7-3 ensured Wednesfield took the early lead through Paul Heard and Lee Kemp. From there, The Aces further extended their lead to nine points at the halfway stage – Coventry managing just the one heat win.

A sluggish start to the second half left Coventry fighting an uphill battle, however there was a moment of glory for teenager Daniel Drewett when he guided Bobby McMillan home to a Coventry 7-3 in heat 17.

Ollie Morris – making his second appearance in the first team – also impressed by picking up his first senior team heat win whilst Sammie Marsh scored three points from her two rides. Coventry based youngsters Mason Phillips, Daniel Drewett, Matt Hambidge and Josh Marsh all scored double figure returns.

A last heat 7-3 for the Aces meant they concluded their Midland League campaign with a 98-80 win over the Godiva City side.
